About the artist

I am first and foremost an artist, but I have always felt part writer in my mind. Sean Landers (b. 1962, Palmer, Massachusetts) is a painter and multimedia artist who lives and works in New York. He received a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art and an MFA from the Yale University School of Art in 1986. His practise encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and film. Drawing on personal experience and art historical reference, Landers frequently incorporates recurring figures and text, developing a visual language that is both diaristic and self-referential. His text-based paintings of the 1990s were influential within the broader context of that decade’s artistic production, and language has remained a consistent element in his work. In recent years, Landers has depicted sailors, clowns, and animals—both wild and domesticated—within landscapes marked by environmental instability. His paintings engage with traditions associated with Winslow Homer and Thomas Cole, situating these subjects within a contemporary context. In 2023, Animal Kingdom , the artist’s second major exhibition in France, was presented at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, following a 2020 retrospective at the Le Consortium.
