About the artist

The multi-layered paintings of Maja Ruznic rarely begin with a fixed concept, but unfold and take shape during the process. With a mix of abstraction and figuration, she explores themes such as the subconscious, memory, and the body. With flowing lines and expressive color schemes, she evokes a sense of personal and collective history, reflecting on loss and healing. Recently, she was part of the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. This year, Ruznic is prominently featured at Site Santa Fe, one of the most important U.S. biennials, curated by Cecilia Alemani, the curator of the 2022 Venice Biennale. Her works are included in the collections of the Musée d‘Art Moderne, Paris; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California; the Dallas Art Museum; the EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Espoo, Finland; the Harwood Museum of Art, Taos, New Mexico; the Jiménez-Colón Collection, Puerto Rico; the Portland Art Museum, Oregon; the Rachofsky House, Dallas; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Maja Ruznic (born 1983 in Bosnia and Herzegovina) lives and works in Placitas, New Mexico, USA.
