About the artist

(b. 1935, Mpumalanga, South Africa) is an artist and cultural ambassador of the Ndebele people of South Africa. Mahlangu’s nearly 80-year practice extends the tradition of Ndebele mural painting, passed from mother to daughter for generations: painting freehand, without the use of a straight edge or prior sketches, utilizing a chicken feather brush. The aesthetic philosophy of Ndebele mural painting emphasizes clean lines, rhythm, sym-metry, balance, and distinctly separate but carefully harmonized colors which embody emotional journeys, personal prayers, and collective values. Since her inclusion in the landmark 1989 Centre Pompidou exhibition Magiciens de la Terre, Mahlangu has become a vital figure in global contemporary art, with work featured in Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and institutions worldwide. Recent exhibitions include a traveling solo retrospective which began at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, 2024, and traveling group show Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, which began at the Brooklyn Museum, 2024. Mahlangu will be the subject of a traveling museum show organized by the American Federation of Arts (AFA) in 2026. Mahlangu has held institutional exhibitions in more than 20 countries, including the British Museum, London, UK; Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv, Israel; Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington D.C., USA, and Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain. Mahlangu’s works are in international permanent collections, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; South Africa National Gallery, Iziko Museum, Cape Town; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; Brooklyn Museum, NY; Pérez Art Museum, Miami, FL; and the Virginia Muse-um of Fine Arts, VA. Turning 90 this year, Mahlangu continues to live and work in Mpumalanga province, South Africa.
