Terron Cooper Sorrells, born in 1994 is a printmaker and painter from Virginia. He graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016. Throughout his time in the program, Sorrells acquired an unique drawing sensibility that lends itself to his painting and printmaking practice. Sorrells has been surrounded by western culture and ideologies for most of his life. He makes work that is meant to establish spaces for Black narratives in fine art institutions. Using oil paint and his extensive studies of American history, Terron Cooper Sorrells creates work with a loving touch that is enriching and intricate. Sorrells is absorbed in the idea of spreading African-American culture through his art, focusing on dramatic yet intimate and vulnerable scenes. Because the scale of his work is large, when engaged, it is easy to become immersed in the paintings. Sorrells sees this ability to pull people into the work as a chance for the audience to escape and interact intently with the characters within the work.
