Alina Grasmann is a realist painter whose large-scale, site-specific series blur fact and fiction. Rooted in architecture and historically charged places, her paintings transform real locations into spaces where memory, perception, and imagination converge. The scenes unfold like chamber-play stages, inviting viewers to step inside and become part of the narrative. Rather than illustrating existing myths, Grasmann creates open spaces for association in which new stories can emerge. Each series contains 10–20 paintings, all based on specific locations. Grasmann researches places and then visits them in person, recording her experiences and the atmosphere through photographs. Grasmann studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Pinakothek der Moderne, Kunstverein München, Kunsthalle Trier, and Galerie der Künstler. Her works are held in public and private collections including Foundation Haus Schminke, the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, and The Perimeter in London. She received the Hans Purrmann Award in 2021. Grasmann has participated in artist residencies including NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, Rocking S Art Ranch in Phoenix, Fridman Gallery in Beacon, and Rolando Anselmi Gallery in Rome. The artist lives and works in Munich and New York City.
